USAuPair melds cultural exchange, education and childcare into one
rewarding program for young adults seeking to spend a year in America as an
au pair. While providing a valuable child care service to host families, au pairs learn about family life in the USA and have the opportunity to travel, improve their English and further their education.
This unique program is a wonderful child care alternative when compared to other programs. Au pairs are young people, ages 18-26, who live with American families while providing up to 45 hours of child care weekly.
Regular Program
The US Department of State designates agencies as sponsors of the au pair cultural exchange program. Designated sponsors like USAuPair, are required to function within federal guidelines that cover au pair work hours, medical benefits, length of stay, weekly stipend, child care experience and more. Au pairs enter the US on a J-1 exchange visitor visa that is valid for 12 months.
Extended Program
Regulations allow au pairs to work up to 45 hours per week and up to 10 hours per day. Schedules may be flexible as long as au pairs receive one free weekend per month, and one and one-half continuous days off weekly. In other words, au pairs may not work more than 5 ½ days per week. Weekends off begin Friday evenings and end Monday mornings. USAuPair supports the extended program and allows au pairs to extend their program by 6, 9 or 12 months. The extended program requires au pairs and host families to comply with regulations governing the au pair program. Regulations require host families to provide au pairs with vacation and education benefits during the extended period. These benefits vary depending upon the length of the extended period.
